IES FERNANDO SAVATER HELD ITS TRADITIONAL “POLVORÓN RACE”
In the morning of Wednesday, December 21st, the VI edition of the Polvorón Race was held at the IES Fernando Savater, in Jerez.
As in previous years, it is an original sport activity that does not lack the festive mood of Christmas Days and, more importantly, keeps a charity purpose. The students participating in this peculiar race run along a circuit that starts in school and goes throughout the streets surrounding it, so we will count on the assistance of Local Police patrols that will regulate the traffic to facilitate the development of the race.
This time, some schools in the area participated, such as the IES SERITIUM and IES CABALLERO BONALD from Jerez, or IES BAJO GUADALQUIVIR from Lebrija. Also CEIP BLAS INFANTE and CEIP MONTEALEGRE. If last year 400 students participated, in this edition the number of registered students is over 450. For the better development of the race, different categories have been established including the 6th grade students from Primary Education plus 1st and 2nd ESO students, then 3rd and 4th ESO students and finally Bachillerato students. The first classified will be awarded in both Boys and Girls categories.
The "Polvorón Race" was born six years ago as an initiative of the Department of Physical Education, as a motivating element for students for the subject, since, from September to December, they perform different athletics practices at school, included in the Physical Condition content block of the subject curriculum. This activity is, in some way, the culmination of the work done throughout the term.
From the first edition, the race also has a strong solidarity aim since, to enrol, it is necessary to contribute with 1 kilo of food. All the food collected adds up to the Christmas campaign carried out at IES Fernando Savater and will be donated to the charities Cáritas and Spanish Red Cross. This year, our Christmas athletes contributed with almost 500 kilos.
The curious name of this unique sport event is also related to the Christmas background of this activity since, just for fun, participants get a "polvorón" if they finish the race.
This year, we would like to thank the technical cooperation we got from Jerez City Hall, Red Cross, Fran Sport, IES Fernando Savater Parents' Association and Fitness 19, whose monitors carried out a Zumba exhibition in the closing ceremony of this event.
